The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) recently confirmed a measles  outbreak in Gaines County, with six reported cases in unvaccinated school-aged children. Because measles is extremely contagious, additional cases could emerge .

Why Measles Is a Concern:

  • Highly Contagious: Measles can spread through coughing and sneezing, and it remains infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

Serious Complications: Measles can lead to pneumonia, hearing loss, or other long-term health issues, particularly in young children,  individuals with compromised immune systems. For pregnant women, measles can lead to her baby being born early at a low birthweight.

Who Needs the Measles (MMR) Vaccine?
Following the DSHS guidelines, here is what you need to know about measles immunizations:

  1. Infants (6 to 11 months):
    • Administer an early dose of MMR vaccine.
    • Continue with the CDC’s recommended schedule:
      • Another dose at 12–15 months of age.
      • A final dose at 4–6 years of age.
  2. Children (Over 12 months old):
    • Unvaccinated children: Give one dose of MMR right away, then a second dose at least 28 days later.
    • Partially vaccinated children (only one dose received): Give the second dose as soon as possible (at least 28 days after the first).
  3. Teens and Adults (With no evidence of immunity):
    • Administer one dose immediately and follow with a second dose at least 28 days after the first.

Preventing Further Spread

  • Stay Informed: Watch for announcements from the state health department and local schools.
  • Know the Signs: Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes, and a rash that spreads downward from the head to the rest of the body.
