After a hospital stay due to surgery, illness, or injury, some patients need more time and care before they are ready to return home. That is where the Swing Bed Program at McCamey County Hospital District provides essential support. This program offers patients the chance to continue healing with skilled nursing and rehabilitation services in a familiar, local setting.
What Does “Swing Bed” Mean?
It’s called “swing bed” because a patient’s care swings — or transitions — from acute inpatient care to skilled nursing or rehabilitation, all while they remain in a hospital bed. This means a patient can move from receiving intensive treatment to receiving personalized recovery care within the same facility, or patients may transfer into McCamey’s Swing Bed Program directly after a stay at another hospital. The goal is to support recovery with the right level of care while keeping patients close to home and family.
Who Qualifies for Swing Bed Services?
Swing Bed care is available for patients who no longer need hospital-level acute care but still require skilled nursing or therapy. This includes:
- Recovery following surgery, such as joint replacements or abdominal procedures
- Rehabilitation after a stroke or serious illness
- Ongoing wound care or long-term IV antibiotics
- Strength-building after extended hospital stays
Each patient receives an individualized care plan tailored to their recovery goals.
