If you hear “physical therapy” and immediately think of recovering a major injury, you’re only seeing part of the picture.
Physical therapy can certainly help someone recover after an accident or a sports injury. It can also address persistent pain, balance problems, vertigo, difficulty walking, weakness, and other issues that make everyday movement harder. This makes physical therapy incredibly important for aging as people consider how best to ensure long-term tactics to ensure health and longevity.
“Physical therapy is about more than recovering from an injury. It’s about helping people stay strong, steady, and confident in how they move so they can continue doing the things they enjoy as they age. Addressing pain, weakness, or balance concerns early can make a real difference in maintaining mobility and independence over time,” said Chance Brady, PT, DPT, COMT, OCS, Director of Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation Services, McCamey County Hospital District
During National Physical Therapy Month, McCamey County Hospital District is encouraging community members to think about movement as an important part of maintaining health and independence. Whether it’s for alleviating pain or taking care of a nagging injury before it gets worse, the qualified well-trained team in McCamey has your back – literally.
Pay Attention to Changes in How You Move
Movement problems do not always begin with a dramatic injury.
Maybe your knee has gradually made it harder to walk comfortably. Perhaps back pain is interfering with work. You may feel less steady than you used to, or dizziness and vertigo may make certain movements difficult.
Those changes can affect much more than exercise. They can influence work, errands, hobbies, household tasks, and confidence in everyday activities.
Physical therapy focuses on evaluating those limitations and developing a treatment plan based on the individual.
At the McCamey Wellness Center, the MCHD physical therapy team provides personalized, one-on-one evaluations and treatment programs to help patients improve movement and function.
More Reasons to Consider Physical Therapy
MCHD Physical Therapy works with patients experiencing a variety of concerns, including:
- Work and sports injuries
- Injuries from motor vehicle accidents
- Headaches
- Chronic pain
- Shoulder, elbow, or wrist pain
- Back, hip, knee, or lower-leg pain
- Difficulty walking
- Balance impairments
- Vertigo
The goal is not simply to treat a painful area. Physical therapy looks at how the problem is affecting movement and function and works toward helping the patient return to everyday activities as safely and comfortably as possible.
Balance Deserves Attention, Too
Balance is particularly important as we age.
Changes in balance or confidence while walking may cause people to become less active, which can further affect strength and mobility.
MCHD offers free balance screenings for adults age 65 and older through its physical therapy team. The screening can help assess fall risk and provide an opportunity to learn how physical therapy may help improve balance and overall strength.
You do not have to wait until a fall occurs to pay attention to balance.
Keep Moving Toward What Matters
Whether the goal is returning to work, staying active, moving with less discomfort, improving balance, or getting back to a favorite activity, physical therapy can provide a structured path forward.
National Physical Therapy Month is a reminder to notice what your body is telling you. If pain, dizziness, weakness, or changes in movement are limiting your daily life, consider talking with a healthcare provider about whether physical therapy is right for you.
